Mmmmmmmmm . . . Gingerbread.

A little while back, Mat posted about his experiences with building a gingerbread house with his daughter. He did the work in a rush and it ultimately resulted in shambles. The blog entry provided a good chuckle and I went on with my life . . .

. . . until I saw a similar kit while walking through the store. My poor wife knew immediately that I must purchase the kit and try it myself (it’s kind of like when I wrecked my vehicle into a telephone pole and then immediately drive the rental car to the exact same spot . . . I just can’t explain it).

Our Gingerbread HouseSo, we got home and I sat the kit aside. Knowing that the main flaw in Mat’s plan was a rush on time, I waited until Daphne and I had plenty of time. We opened the kit and surveyed all the pieces, the frosting, the candy and the sprinkles. It was all there. We mapped out our plans and started using the frosting to connect the walls.

But this frosting . . . even though it tasted great, it just didn’t seem right. It was hard to get out of the tube and it just didn’t hold well. I had my worries at this point, but I continued, thinking enough frosting and allowing enough time for the joints to dry would see us through.

Soon, we had our house built. It was great. We started putting on the gumdrops and it was really looking good. Then, as we were decorating the walls, it slowly slid into a pile of cookies that were poorly frosted.

Drat! I knew that frosting was bad news.

Of course, I couldn’t give in. I grabbed the green cake frosting from Daphne’s birthday cupcakes and started rebuilding it. Sure enough, the frosting held. It wasn’t pretty, but we built a gingerbread house.

Then I ate it. Mmmmmmmmm . . . gingerbread.
