Free Range Thinker

I was not sure where to post this. I thought momentarily about putting it at No Other Rock, but I thought twice becuase it could take that blog down a path that would detract from its purpose. So I am posting it here (possibly because this blog has no “real” purpose).

I go to church and I have my preferences on how I would like to see church worship be. I think saying things like “let us quiet our hearts to worship” is silly. I want an upbeat, energy-filled service that makes me want to shout. I want the energy level to be so great, it’s impossible to be bored. Maybe we should instead say “let us ralley our souls and flood our hearts with the Holy Spirit so the whole world can hear us!”

I also would love to see a church that approached giving with unusual vigor. I think we should encourage people to do more than simply place their folded check or sealed envelope in the offering plate. I think it would be GREAT if we raised our check-clinched fists high and slapped the offering down on top of the others and shouted “BAM!” or “BOO-YAH!” as loud as we could.

I’d love to see these things . . . but inevitably, someone would frown upon that. Inevitably, someone would say that it is “not appropriate” or that “it is not Christian-like.” Heck, I am sure there are many others who would assert that those actions would DISTRACT THEM from worship. My response would be, “I am sorry, I didn’t realize church was about YOU!”

With that said, I present to you a video below. Before you view it, let me say that this post is not about my church, people at my church or any example in particular really. It’s a simple observation of the selfishness that exists in our society. [I must also note that I first saw this video posted at Think Christian - I'm just expounding upon the idea]. Now, without further ado . . .

UPDATE: I have been doing a little more research on this video (mainly because the pianist looks eerily familiar to the guy who played the “Christian” doofus in the misdirected “Christ-Follower” videos – if someone can provide insight, I would appreciate it). I have traced this video to Bobby Parker (AKA “Captain Bobcat” AKA “Salvationsoldier”); in Fort Myers, Florida. His MySpace blog has what appears to be a sermon transcript. It is well worth the read if this post means anything to you. (I may end up posting this at NOR after all).

. . . the bottom line is – that if we want to call it worship, then it has to be entirely about God – our preferences should really not matter all that much! . . . The world tries so hard to try and tell you how to live – what to eat – what to watch – watch to listen to – What is cool- what isn’t cool. In fact they have developed so many patterns and molds for what they want you to be – But that is not what God wants for you – God has big plans for you – Don’t conform to the patterns of the world – but let Jesus be your guide and allow him to transform you.
